Christmas Traditions

Everyone year our family makes tamales for Christmas dinner. When I lived in San Diego, I would help my Nana each year to make them. Now that I live in STL, it is not as easy for me to help. This year I was able to be there :) Making tamales takes quite a bit of time, but I love this time, I love sharing these moments with my grandmother talking, sharing memories and listening to cumbias. Plus the hard work is so worth it, my grandmother makes the best tamales! I am so glad I was able to be there this year!

Do you have a Christmas tradition? Post a comment and one will be randomly chosen on MONDAY for a $15 Itunes Gift Card!

B.J. and I are looking forward to starting some new traditions together this year. This year, we're planning on making gingerbread cookies together and eating them while watching a movie marathon. (This year is Christmas movies!)

When I was little, my Grandma always used to make a cake for Christmas Eve that said "Happy Birthday Jesus" and I loved that. Then we would make pizza dough from scratch, and she always used to let me help her knead the dough. This year will be the first year we aren't home for Christmas because our little baby boy is turning 1 the day after Christmas (and we're having his party here), so I'm going to miss seeing my grandma at Christmas :(. But now that we have a family of our own, we're planing on starting some new traditions.... like over-eating, and gorging ourselves on cookies, and stuffing ourselves with pizza, and other acts of pure gluttony :).

We do "joy stockings." We open our stockings on Christmas Eve (which always include certain items like a new ornament for each girl, etc). But the day before, each person writes a note to each family member about how that person brought them joy that year and sticks that note in the stocking. So before we get to the "gifts" at the bottom of the stocking, they read their "joy notes" from each family member out loud. It's a very special family time. I then take the notes and type them up so that we'll always remember what we wrote each year! - Jenni Williams

I remember always going to my great Grandma's house on Christmas Eve. There were a lot of us in that family (she had 9 kids!), but Great Grandma always invited the other side of the family over as well. The celebration would start at 2 pm and go until everyone left. There was so much family and love in that house. Even at 96, she still had one last Christmas Eve at her house before passing away the following March. It's not Christmas Eve without Great Grandma, but the traditions that have spiraled out of my great Grandma's house are unforgettable.

Kelly!! I love this post and seeing your Nana:) Lisa-that is such a great tradition, making a cake for baby Jesus.

Favorite tradition-getting a real Christmas Tree. Yes it is a lot more work but everything awesome in life does:)

Great post, Kelly! My favorite "old" tradition is making German Christmas cookies with my mom and sisters. They take a long time, but are yummy, lemon-y sugar cookies. My favorite "new" tradition is decorating our house with the husband for the first time this year!

From Rebecca

When I was little my grandfather would read the Christmas story from Luke 2 before we opened our Christmas presents. After he passsed on, my Dad read Luke 2. He wore a red vest with gold buttons on it. When he passed on, my nephew Brian inherited the red vest, so now he reads the Christmas story, so we will all be reminded of the real meaning of Christmas.
